Nevertheless, as we approach the holiday season, it’s important to shop cautiously because along with the genuinely good deals, there’s also a lot of misinformation and hype. Following are 6 Black Friday shopping myths to keep in mind as you start planning your thrifty holiday shopping spree.

Myth #1: If you want the best deals, you need to shop on Black Friday
According to research commissioned by the iconic The Wall Street Journal, Black Friday isn’t always the lowest priced holiday shopping day of the year that it’s hyped up to be. For example, the study showed that if you purchased a men’s watch in March you’d get a better deal on it than you would on Black Friday and that October is the best month to purchase a flat screen TV; weird right? In addition, retailers are competing for additional business with some, like Walmart, offering to match their competitors Black Friday deals a week before, and others extending the special holiday sales anywhere between a couple of days to weeks. As a matter of fact, there are usually great deals offered on Thanksgiving Day and in some cases, some of the best deals have sold out before Black Friday.

Myth #2: You’ll end up dealing with pushy, annoying crowds if you shop on Black Friday
Sure, you can expect hoards of people hitting the brick and mortar stores, hoping to get their hands on the latest gadget, at the best price, before it sells out, but statistically speaking, you’re more likely to see an alien spaceship before you get injured by an over anxious mom bowling you over to get her hand’s on the latest popular doll or toy truck for her little one.


Myth #3: Luxury and designer merchandise doesn’t go on sale
While Black Friday is typically related to lower and mid range merchandise, a lot of holiday shoppers overlook higher end stores which is unfortunate because even they are getting into the “Black Friday” retail sales arena these days with their own money saving promotions. That being said, don’t expect stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus or Saks Fifth Avenue to discount to prices you’d get at Target, Kohl’s or Walmart, but if shopping at these stores is in your budget you can get some fantastic deals on everything from designer shoes and perfume to holiday apparel. A lot of these upscale retailers also have outlet versions of their stores where you can save even more money on high end fashion.

Myth #4: Stores have plenty of doorbuster deals in stock
Yeah, right! This is unfortunately not usually the truth. The main purpose of doorbusters is to offer extremely low priced merchandise solely to generate buzz and entice shoppers into their stores on Black Friday. What’s disappointing is that most of these retailers actually have limited quantities of these items on hand and unless you’re one of the first people in the store come Black Friday morning, you’re probably out of luck.

Myth #5: The Black Friday Ads List All of the Good Deals
On Thanksgiving Day (for decades) retailers like Best Buy, Target and Walmart have advertised supplemental Black Friday promotions that weren’t in their ads. These so called secret discounts are typically only available online, so the secret is to find them on the web before hitting the brick and mortar stores on Black Friday. On top of that, a number of retailers end up responding to their competitor’s pricing and make last minute price reductions in an effort to compete.

Myth #6: Cyber Monday online sales offer better deals than Black Friday
If you’d prefer to chill out after enjoying your fabulous Thanksgiving meal instead of hitting the mall at midnight or at the crack of dawn on Black Friday, we totally get it; that’s what online shopping is for right? That being said, if you’ve decided to do all your shopping online this year, you don’t need to wait until Cyber Monday to do it shop either. Sure, Cyber Monday’s sales will be fantastic but you should know that some of the best Black Friday deals are also available online and usually start Thursday morning. In other words, there’s no reason to wait until Cyber Monday to get good deals.
